A Remedy for Rents: Darning Samplers and Other Needlework from the Whitelands College Collection was an exhibition I curated in 2016. Whitelands College, now part of the University of Roehampton, was founded in 1841 as a women's teacher-training college and quickly gained a reputation for the excellence of its plain needlework. The exhibition, at the Constance Howard Gallery, Goldsmiths, University of London, presented a selection of work from the Whitelands College archive, showcasing an album of exquisitely-stitched darning samplers produced by students graduating between 1877 and 1902. The booklet I wrote to accompany the exhibition can be read and downloaded below.
